Master Studies

When the Louvre opened in 1793, It gave artists the opportunity to copy from its vast collection. Cezanne famously said, ” The Louvre s the book from which we all learn to read.” In those days, many artists perfected their skills by first copying their teachers’ works before going on to develop their own unique styles.
In this tradition, I find myself in good company when, from time to time, I spend a few days studing the paintings of artists I admire, such as Velazquez, Sargent and Zorn.
